When looking into the closets of most women, you will find clothing of various styles, shapes, and colors. Some clothes fit and some do not. Often these closets are jam packed with rarely worn items. You may even find clothes in the closet that still have price tags attached!
Feeling convicted? It’s okay. Join the club of the average clothes-hoarding woman! Well, here’s a challenge: what if we cleaned out our closets and left only two garments to wear every day that would make us look amazing? Of course I don’t mean literally wearing the same two physical garments every day. But I would like you to consider the woman in Proverbs 31:25 (NKJV): “Strength and honor are her clothing; she shall rejoice in time to come.” To say that “strength and honor are her clothing” is to say that strength and honor adorn her daily.
Each day upon our rising, showering, and brushing teeth the next thing to do is to put on clothes. Your clothing accentuates your very being. Your clothing covers you. Your clothing says a lot about who you are. Imagine covering yourself daily with strength and honor!
The word strength in this scripture does not refer to physical strength but rather to strength of character. Strength of character is one of the two “garments” that should be in our closets. Take it out and put it on! Do you know that character will open doors for you that were otherwise unattainable? Your character precedes you. Your character speaks louder than anything you could ever say. It speaks to who you truly are. How do you obtain strength of character? It is achieved through your obedience to God’s commands and your faith and trust in His promises. The more you obey and exercise your faith the more your character is strengthened.
The second of the two “garments” that should be in your closet is honor. Honor is high respect or esteem. The woman who wears honor as her clothing is not only a person of importance because of her relationship to the almighty God, but she is also one who has a reputation of strong character. She is honorable, she “wears” honor! Honor is her ornament; honor is her covering. Clothes don’t make a woman, but in this case her clothes should speak volumes about who she is on the inside.
The purpose of clothing is to cover and complement. Some of us have clothing in our closets that neither covers nor complements. At times we also put on spiritual “clothing” that does not complement us. We have put on anger, fear, pride – even heaviness or depression.
Because of the strength of the woman’s character, her position in the kingdom, and her faith in the Most High God, she can “rejoice in the time to come.” This woman’s view of the future is quite optimistic, expressed in the exuberance of laughter. She has nothing to fear. Her mantra is “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” (Psalms 27:1). She laughs at whatever troubles the future may bring because she is metaphorically clothed in “strength and honor.” Being a woman of character and strength, she is prepared for whatever may come. She is prepared physically and spiritually for the days ahead.
Let’s clean out our spiritual closets today leaving only strength and honor, and let’s continue to build our wardrobe from these two garments!
