{"id":23189,"date":"2025-08-28T12:58:12","date_gmt":"2025-08-28T17:58:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/openbiblemessage.org\/?p=23189"},"modified":"2025-08-28T14:37:42","modified_gmt":"2025-08-28T19:37:42","slug":"five-thoughts-on-creating-christ-followers-in-todays-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/openbiblemessage.org\/es\/2025\/08\/five-thoughts-on-creating-christ-followers-in-todays-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Five Thoughts on Creating Christ Followers in Today\u2019s World"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:23px\">Recently, at an Alpha leaders\u2019 meeting at our church, someone asked, \u201cWhat does relevant ministry look like in today\u2019s culture?\u201d I think I decoded that question as \u201cHow do we effectively create Christ followers in a way that is relevant for today?\u201d Cultural shifts, digital saturation, and generational expectations have reshaped the ministry landscape. Yet, helping people find and follow Jesus remains our mission. Jesus\u2019 call to \u201cgo and make disciples\u201d hasn\u2019t changed\u2014but the environment in which we fulfill that call certainly has.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I would like to share five thoughts on how we can effectively disciple in today&#8217;s world, the first two being observations on the state of our culture and the final three being suggestions for how we can minister in relevant ways in this culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#f26500;font-size:22px\"><strong>1. We are being shaped by our culture\u2019s digital fluidity and fluency.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are living in an age of rapid digital transformation. Platforms change. Trends shift. Everyone has a voice AND everyone is selling you something. The result? People are overwhelmed with content and unsure of what\u2019s even real anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">News, opinions, and even personal milestones unfold in real time, framed through algorithms and filtered bias. <em>We&#8217;re not just consuming content; we&#8217;re being shaped by it.<\/em> And just when we\u2019ve adapted to one platform (remember Facebook?), a new one arises, demanding more of our time and attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Why it matters:<\/em><\/strong> Discipleship today must cut through the noise. We can&#8217;t just add to the information pile; we must offer something real, relational, and rooted in truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-2 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#f26500;font-size:22px\"><strong>2. Despite being more \u201cconnected\u201d than ever, people are starving for genuine relationships.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People may be connected and engaged in a myriad of conversations, but they lack authenticity and real community.My adopted daughter, for example, grieved the loss of our dog not by turning to close family or friends but by posting online and receiving brief, surface-level sympathy. She devoured those one-liners, but they didn\u2019t satisfy her deep need for comfort and true compassion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the paradox of the present: constant connection without true community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Why it matters:<\/em><\/strong> Discipleship flourishes in authentic relationships. We must move past content delivery to heart-level engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, I know there is more to observe about today\u2019s culture than these two aspects, but this is a good starting point to start structuring our ministries to multiply Christ followers in our current context. Now let\u2019s look at a few practical ways we can do that. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-3 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#f26500;font-size:22px\"><strong>3. Prioritize relational discipleship.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Digital influence may shape opinions, but it doesn\u2019t form character. What forms a disciple is being seen, known, and challenged in the context of real relationships. Discipleship today needs to happen &#8220;eyeball to eyeball.&#8221; People are more likely to engage today not by having an expert stand up front and tell them the \u201canswers\u201d but by sitting in a circle, in a transparent and safe environment where they are safe to explore the questions, parse the information, AND where they can be mentored by people who model authentic faith.&nbsp;These mentors need to \u201cdo life together\u201d with them so that they can provide consistent care and support.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus modeled this beautifully. He didn\u2019t just teach the crowds; He lived life with His disciples. His method was both invitational (\u201cCome, follow me\u201d) and challenging (\u201cTake up your cross\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Practical Steps:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-4 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#307ca9\">\u2022 <strong>Think small: Build organic small groups that foster vulnerability and trust.<br>\u2022 Pair new believers with mature Christians who are willing to \u201cdo life together.\u201d<br>\u2022 Create safe spaces for honest questions and struggles without judgment.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Discipleship isn\u2019t about having all the answers; it\u2019s about walking together toward Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-5 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#f26500;font-size:22px\"><strong>4. Move from information to transformation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reality is that people don\u2019t want or need more information; Google and AI have given us all the information of the ages at our fingertips.&nbsp;But here&#8217;s the catch: information alone doesn\u2019t transform lives. True discipleship must bridge the gap between knowing about God and being transformed by Him. This means shifting the focus from merely imparting biblical knowledge to fostering genuine spiritual growth and life change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Practical Steps:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-6 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#307ca9\">     \u2022 <strong>Encourage spiritual disciplines like PB &amp; J (Prayer, Bible reading and   Journaling\/Meditation) into daily rhythms.<\/strong><br>     \u2022 <strong>Propose application-oriented questions: What is God saying to me and what am I going to do about it? How will this inform my decisions and change my actions this week?<\/strong><br>     \u2022 <strong>Share stories of personal transformation to make faith tangible.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal isn\u2019t smarter Christians; it\u2019s surrendered lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-7 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#f26500;font-size:22px\"><strong>5. Make discipleship practical and missional.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:17px\">Discipleship must extend beyond study and conversation. Jesus sent His disciples out. They learned by doing. In today\u2019s world, hands-on faith matters more than ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mission trips, community outreach, and acts of justice and mercy aren\u2019t just good deeds, they\u2019re discipleship labs.&nbsp; I like to say that <em>\u201cMinistry is simply an excuse for discipleship<\/em>.\u201d&nbsp; It\u2019s in the doing that faith is tested, stretched, and refined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Practical Steps<\/em><\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#307ca9\">\u2022 <strong>Involve disciples in regular service projects and real-world ministry.<\/strong><br>\u2022 <strong>Help people discover their gifts and put them to work in their communities, not just inside the walls of the church<\/strong><br>\u2022 <strong>Reflect on service together: What did God show you as you served others?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Missional discipleship reminds us that faith isn&#8217;t just personal, it&#8217;s participatory<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:20px\"><strong>Final Thought: Never forget the role of the Holy Spirit.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Disciple-making is a divine partnership. Strategies, programs, and best practices are helpful, but only God transforms hearts. Prayer must be our starting point and our sustaining power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pray for those you lead. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide, convict, and empower.
